Simulation of stand dynamics for miombo woodlands in Kitulangalo Forest Reserve, Morogoro, Tanzania

چکیده
Miombo woodlands constitute the most extensive type of forest cover within South and East Africa, Tanzania in particular, they are seriously threatened by intensive degradation deforestation. The dynamics miombo stands were examined this study using a simple simulation system applied to experimental at Kitulangalo Forest Reserve (KFR) Tanzania. Prediction tree-level diameter increment, mortality, ingrowth across species groups with empirical models based on data from sites constituted essential elements system. Diameter distribution, stand basal area, volume yield, above-ground biomass accumulation assessed three harvesting alternatives groups. results indicate high degree positive response careful selective lightly degraded, recovering forests. Simulation systems compiled experimentally seem promising as tools for research sustainable management woodlands.

Spatial distribution of temporal dynamics in anthropogenic fires in miombo savanna woodlands of Tanzania
BACKGROUND Anthropogenic uses of fire play a key role in regulating fire regimes in African savannas. These fires contribute the highest proportion of the globally burned area, substantial biomass burning emissions and threaten maintenance and enhancement of carbon stocks. An understanding of fire regimes at local scales is required for the estimation and prediction of the contribution of these...
متن کاملEthnomedicinal study of plants used in villages around Kimboza forest reserve in Morogoro, Tanzania
BACKGROUND An ethnomedicinal study was conducted to document medicinal plants used in the treatment of ailments in villages surrounding Kimboza forest reserve, a low land catchment forest with high number of endemic plant species. METHODS Ethnobotanical interviews on medicinal plants used to treat common illnesses were conducted with the traditional medical practitioners using open-ended semi...
متن کاملMonitoring vegetation dynamics and carbon stock density in miombo woodlands
BACKGROUND The United Nation's Program for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) aims to reduce the 20% contribution to global emissions of greenhouse gases from the forest sector, offering a financial value of the carbon stored in forests as an incentive for local communities. The pre-requisite for the setup of a participatory REDD + Program is the monitoring, re...
متن کاملEconomics of charcoal production in miombo woodlands of eastern Tanzania: some hidden costs associated with commercialization of the resources
This paper assigns monetary values to commercial production of charcoal (using traditional earth kilns) in the miombo woodlands surrounding Kitulanghalo Forest Reserve in eastern Tanzania, through cost–benefit analysis (CBA). Charcoal is the most commercialised resource in the study area and the net present value (NPV) for the charcoal business over a 15-year period was US$ 511 ha. The profit f...
متن کاملA simulation analysis of the detectability of understory burns in miombo woodlands
The miombo woodlands of southern Africa are one of the most extensively burned biomes in the tropics. The detectability of understory burns in these woodlands was assessed with a sensitivity analysis approach, based on a hybrid geometrical–optical radiative transfer model. Model input data were obtained from a variety of sources, including field biometry and spectroradiometry, and satellite dat...
